Vinegar – way more interesting!!

Dear Reader,

A wearing week it has been, here are the main highlightss. I’ll start from the bottom, for it is researching vinegar that has me sitting here one late Spring evening. I’m keen to explore fruits that can be used. Ok so far I’m not finding the results I want, but patience will out.

Vinegar Making

Vinegar making came as part of the fermenting course run by Matthew’s Kitchen in Bucklebury and as you expect when you spend the hard earned to go on a course, it was revelatory. We were hands-on learning of Kombucha, Kimchi, sour dough and sauerkraut SCOBY!!!!. I won’t remember correctly but Scoby is something like a Special Combination Of Bacterias and Yeasts. It is also should be a character on Dr Who. In Fermentation World this ‘thing’ is called “Mother” and am feeling more confident that she has inspired a Dr Who character… I mean, really, it is frightening stuff.

Mother transforms foods to fermented foods… I say go on a course, if only to gain confidence with the freaky ingredients.

Outside The Window

Here is a picture outside the window. For years I’ve meant to photograph Dicot Power Station regularly. The Power Station is slightly north of here and admittedly a tad more glamourous (ok famous). The Power Station has always been in a state of flux, if only for the fields around it or the clouds the steam make, but lately houses and Harwell research have much altered the panorama. But outside FW office window is The Field which should be the star of all future blogs. It sort of doesn’t do anything much, but constantly changes. Tonight there are lots of rabbits and crows hanging out. And the bare patch slowly but surely is starting to fill.

We started this campaign a number of days ago. It had an instant pledge kindly made by someone in Detroit. Subsequently watching the stats on this has been painful, yet much has been learned and I sort of can’t wait to start another once this one dwindles into a non-event. We had wanted to raise funds to have the new reversible skirts made up in time for Winter…. I guess we need to watch this space to see if will sort itself out. But there is definitely a plan afoot for a better worded campaign. Meanwhile, please feel happy to explore our Kickstarter project through this link@

Brick Lane, Meet the Manufacturer, Make It British

And earlier in the week there was the Make It British and the Meet The Manufacturer event at Brick Lane. Brick Lane is a pretty groovy part of town, they were making a movie down there as I trundled through with my mannequin of Filthy Weather loveliness first thing on a beautiful sunny morning. Later that day as the sun beats down from the opposite direction and after a hard day’s talking at the exhibition (we had a stand), I sat with some easy French folk, who were beautifully French talking easy intellectual things, laughing, drinking long beers and smoking (like the French do) their cigarettes. An exotic 40 mins for this bumpkin who then blagged a cigarette and strolled off to my heavily laden van. Had I taken a stroll I may have joined the Kickstarter funding meeting that was a little further down the street. Hey ho. Meanwhile, next date in the diary for Brick Lane is July 9th for the Arty Car Boot sale :

The Curious Incident of the Dog In The Night time

Finally, got to see a production of the novel! Initially set off about 5 years ago, but my pal had a brutal attack of mental illness which has been an astonishing learning curve for her and I. On Tuesday just gone we sat our bottoms at the production in Oxford, and it blew me away! If you’ve seen it you’ll get what I have experienced, if you haven’t you should because am not going to describe anything, I simply wanted to enthuse.

Here endeth this blog, for one did a little too much digging this mellow Bank Holiday and now needs to stretch her back.

Dear Green Oak Furniture subscribers,

We’ll try to be concise, and give an INDEX of updates for you to explore:

1. Atlantic Salmon Trust

2. New Filthy Weather designs : prices/colours and lighter weights

3. Fund raising

4. Meet The Manufacturer

5. New Retailer

6. Recent Green Oak happenings

7. Femmes Fatales – an enlightening focus group

8. How the garden grows

9. Press enquiries and contact information

The Atlantic Salmon Trust is a using their 50th year to launch a much needed research programme into the marine environment. Filthy Weather are delighted to support the AST on their mission.

Check out the online auction site: particularly LOT 83. An opportunity to help generate much needed funds for AST research programme and be the proud owner of a TWEED Rain Skirt.

The auction culminates with a Gala Dinner in London on May 25th and the online auction is open now. DO NOT DELAY ATALANTIC SALMON TRUST NEEDS US.

2. New Filthy Weather Designs

Ali and I started Filthy Weather with over skirts to suit our lifestyles. They needed to be tough and durable and a pleasure to wear every day if needs be.

We listened to the focus groups. And learned a lot, hence our NEWEST design and our need to announce it.

Our new design is lighter in weight and a fraction of the price of our Tough Skirts. British made still, we have found water resistant COTTON, that can be machine washable AND enables us to make a REVERSIBLE skirt. How excited our we??!!!

To have skirts ready for Summer downpours, we are using Navy Blue and a pale khaki. We would however value your input as to future colourways. All suggestions greatly received. Ping us an email with your ideas. All information makes for the perfect product for you!

Marnie is keen for an English Mustard to a Blood Orange combination of colours. Claire is keen for green and lime. Ali would like the bank account in order and no further comment emerges!!!!! Join the debate

3. Fundraising

Mad Marnie thinks Crowd Fundraising is exciting, she loves the idea that lots of little bits of money can go to make a bigger project. Kickstarter is a crowd fundraising platform that has ethical principle (and a large access to market!). Marnie also believes that it can work as a marketing tool…

Briefly it works like this: Filthy Weather tells their tale as to why they would like crowd funding, if targets are reached FUNDERS get the reward they backed and a brand new creative project emerges.

We are going to fund raise for the Blood Orange / English Mustard skirt via Kickstarter and would be delighted if you were to chip in a quid, or PRE ORDER a new RAIN skirt on Monday when the project goes LIVE:

After the inspiring day at MEET THE MANUFACTURER back in 2015, Ali and Marnie shook hands to create Filthy Weather.

Creating a business is challenging. We wanted to stick by our principles, this event gave us access to like minded souls who have a passion for British design and manufacture.

We’ll be there again this year on Wednesday May 24th showcasing our new British brand. It is a trade event only,

We are delighted to add THE GENEROUS GARDENER to our retail collection. This enchanting retail experience is part of Garden Art + (, the new and important destination shopping destination for the Berkshire market town of Hungerford.

Elodie joint founder of The Generous Gardener, loves the quality and practical style of our designs and asked us to supply her top end Garden shop at the new and very special retail village in as you enter Hungerford.

We love all our retailers, they have been superstars for taking on Filthy Weather and have been so supportive of our brand new brand. Check out a full list of retailers

Marnie just installed an Alice in Wonderland oak seat at an HRH in all it’s silvered and rusty glory recently. The HRH cat kept us good company and as we left the seat sat under the tree looking as if it had always belonged.

At The Game Fair in July the new WILDFLOWER seats should be throughout The Wildnerness, the fly fishing area. Although the steel prototypes have still to arrive and be stared at!!!!

7. FEMMES FATALES – a F.W. focus group

Femmes Fatales are a ladies clay pigeon shooting club that gathered for an event near to FWHQ and so we invited them over for tea after The Femmes Fatales Cup competition. They spoke generously … giving us much food for thought!!! Bless them for following up with more encouragement. They are a great bunch, WE LOVE LUCY!

We were wondering if there was going to be rain this Spring. The ground was so dry. Just as we settle into the news of 6 weeks more dry weather the rain comes and aren’t the fields and gardens lapping it up?!

Chelsea Flower Show starts on Monday. Filthy Weather wishes everyone involved a hugely successful show. Ali is over excited at seeing the beautiful offerings on display on Tuesday, with a thinking cap on as to how we can muscle in next year!

We know the press are interested in our new brand, indeed many of you may be journalists we have met and already exchanged contact details. Filthy Weather is evolving fast and we would be more than happy to help you with news and images. Please drop a line here for more details or things specific.

Love and best wishes this pretty Spring Day. And remember to think of us on rainy days.
